Details Evaluation of bridge-scour data at selected sites in Ohio EPUB
Summary: Scour data collected during were evaluated to determine whether pier scour and contraction scour occurred at 22 bridge sites in Ohio. Pier-scour depths computed from selected pier-scour prediction equations were compared with measured pier-scour depths, and the accuracy of the prediction equations were evaluated.

Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report72 p. These data have been analyzed to isolate pier scour, contraction scour, and abutment scour. The national data base contains local pier scour measurements, 18 contraction scour measurements, and 12 abutment scour measurements. The pier scour measurements were used to evaluate 26 published pier scour equations.
(2) Bridge scour evaluations should be conducted for each bridge to determine whether it is scour critical. A scour critical bridge is one with abutment or pier foundations which are rated as unstable due to: (a) observed scour at the bridge site or (b) a scour potential as determined from a scour evaluation study.
(See HEC 18, Chapter 5.). “Every bridge over water, should be assessed as to its vulnerability to scour in order to determine the prudent measures to be taken for that bridge and the entire inventory” (Richardson and Davis ).
To meet this need, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Local Scour at Bridge Sites. Article (PDF Available) The equilibrium scour, estimated by the extrapolation of the numerical data with the equation by Sheppard, enabled us to estimate values. On the basis of operationally defined handedness data from 1, subjects of both sexes and of ages 10 to 15 years, laterality was compared with prehistorical data of handprints found in caves.

Bridge-scour processes are classified into three components: (1) general long-term aggradation or deg-radation of the stream channel, (2) contraction scour, and (3) local scour at piers and abutments.

Subject: Guidance for Bridge Scour Studies This memorandum provides a summary of current bridge-scour research needs and presents general guidance for defining the scope of several types of common bridge-scour projects.
Design Flood for Bridge Scour - serves for estimating the total scour at the bridge and the design of the bridge foundations to resist damage from the scour. Generally, the magnitude of the design flood for bridge scour is the lesser of the year flood or the overtopping flood.
If the site conditions are such that a more severe flood event is. Some bridges are vulnerable to damage and failure during flooding. Scour may undermine bridge foundations or remove the protection from the abutment slopes, as in these bridge scour examples (PDF). To protect the public, bridges determined to be scour critical are monitored during flooding. Minnesota Bridge Scour Program for existing bridges has consisted of four parts which follow procedures described in FHWA publications HEC, "Evaluating Scour At Bridges", HEC, "Stream Stability At Highway Structures" and HEC “Bridge Scour and Stream Instability Countermeasures”.
